Ever think “what’s the deal with all these mountain bike styles these days?” While there are plenty of different terms manufacturers use to describe their bikes, here are 4 basic types:

Cross Country (XC)

In the mountain bike world, these bikes probably have the most in common with their road bike cousins. XC bikes are a made for riders who seek pedal performance, endurance and efficiency where battles are often won on the uphill.

  • Specialized Pitch- Hardtail
  • Specialized Rock Hopper – Hardtail
  • Specialized Crave – Hardtail
  • Specialized Epic – Fsr

Trail Bikes

Trail bikes are what most people picture when they think “Mountain Bike.” Do you see yourself riding Green Mtn, an all-day epic Buffalo Creek ride, or a quick trip to Fruita? Trail bikes are great climbers and capable descenders giving this category the most versatility.

  • Camber – 29er or 27.5 Fsr
  • Stump Jumper – 29er or 27.5 Fsr
  • Stump Jumper – 27.5+ Fsr
  • Rumor – 29er or 27.5 (Womens)
  • Rhyme – 27.5 (Womens)

All Mountain/Enduro

You could call this category the big brother of the trail bike. These bikes are part of the ever evolving format of racing called “enduro” where climbing is necessary and the downhill sections are riddled with technical and aggressive lines. However that being said, you could climb with the best of them then turn around and take a couple of laps at the bike park or PR Dakota ridge.

  • Specialized Enduro – 27.5 and 29er

Downhill bikes have a burly design with slack geometry to provide stability on steep gnarly terrain with big drops and high speed. With these bikes you’re looking for another way to the top of the hill, whether that’s hiking, shuttling or a chairlift to the top of Trestle Winter Park. If you have the skills to white knuckle all the way to the bottom of the mountain then you may need one of these in your stable.

  • Specialized Demo – 27.5
